Our modern stress is mostly mental and emotional, but we are using the same visceral stress response as animals.
Imagine animals in the wild. When they encounter a predator, the stress response provides the chemistry
needed to escape or fight for their life. Sprinting to safety with the aid of adrenaline, they can escape within seconds. Or a flock of ducks: They get spooked, and they flap their wings and fly away. They mobilize. They do something with the chemistry surging through them.
When we get
spooked, our stress chemistry also gives us everything we need to take flight. But normally, we don’t even move. We may be flapping within our minds, but we are sitting at our desks. Or behind the wheel. Or at the dinner table.
When we learn to consciously relax, we develop the ability to purposefully release unnecessary tension in our body and mind. This creates huge shifts in our well-being. We grow able to pause on purpose, get grounded, and deliberately deepen our breath.
This week
we will practice several tools to use throughout your day, to help induce the Relaxation Response in the moments when you need it the most.
Just a few minutes of practice each day will help to cement these valuable tools into your nervous system. One of my
