In the last few weeks, I’ve had a few conversations about the phenomenon of “spiritual bypassing.” Spiritual bypassing is an attempt to use one’s spirituality, or meditation practice, to escape, avoid or suppress reality.
This ideology is popularized by the “No Fear” craze or the “Don’t Worry, Be Happy!” mentality.
Often, the opposite phenomenon is true. A meditation practice can make us more aware of what we consider “bad” thoughts or emotions. When that happens, it’s skillful to allow, or be with those thoughts or emotions, without needing
to wallow in them. Just observing, “Anger is here,” and noticing how anger feels in our body, in our energy system. Breathing into it and allowing, rather than pushing away or engaging.
This week we will use our meditations to do a little “housekeeping.” We’ll practice Forgiveness Meditation, forgiving ourselves and each other.
This in itself can be a very healing practice. Often, we are unaware of how many small transgressions we hold against ourselves and each other. Join us to practice some helpful tools this week.
I learned this "Forgiveness Meditation" from my meditation teacher, Jonathan Foust (pictured above with me at a workshop.) I'm always amazed at how cleansing and soothing this practice can be.
